Vintage 30s mountaineering crampons
These vintage French crampons were designed to provide additional traction on icy and slippery terrain. Made from sturdy metal, they feature a series of sharp spikes designed to grip the ground and help prevent slipping. Their compact construction reflects the practical approach to early outdoor and mountaineering equipment.
The front is stamped “PARA-CHUTES BREVETÉ SGDG”. The inscription refers to a French patent designation, with SGDG standing for Sans Garantie Du Gouvernement, meaning “without government guarantee”. This historical wording was used in the French patent system and indicates that the government did not guarantee the invention’s novelty or merit.
Crampons of this type are also associated with work on mountain railways, where secure footing on icy terrain was essential.
A fascinating piece of early outdoor equipment, this pair would make a distinctive decorative addition to a cabin, hunting lodge, alpine-inspired interior or collection of vintage mountaineering memorabilia.
After many decades, the crampons remain in good vintage condition and have been carefully treated with antique wax to protect the metal and give the surface a subtle natural sheen. Please note that the original leather straps are no longer present.
