Antique 19th Century French Fleam Knife
This antique fleam knife was made in France in the late 1800s and still bears the original maker’s mark. Fleams were used for bloodletting: in the 19th century mainly by veterinarians and farriers to bleed horses and livestock, and in earlier times also by physicians and barbers on people. Bloodletting was based on the ancient belief that removing “bad blood” restored the balance of the body and could cure fevers, inflammation and many other ailments, a practice long since abandoned.
Today, it stands as a fascinating relic of medical history – a tangible reminder of how different healthcare once was. It would make a remarkable addition to any medical collection, museum display, or cabinet of curiosities.
After more than a century, this fleam remains in good antique condition, showing authentic signs of age and use. Over the years, it has developed a strong oxidized patina that enhances its character and authenticity.
